What Can We Learn from Robocop?

If you have watched Robocop (1987), maybe you will not like Robocop (2014). I remember I have watched Robocop before Robocop (2014), but I forget about the original version. This post is about the remake movie, Robocop (2014), which I have watched this year.

What Can We Learn from Robocop?

1. There are two sides to every coin

We have learnt this from Frozen. For Robocop, we extend the idea further to people. There are good people and bad people out there. There is a Chinese idiom, 害人之心不可有,防人之心不可无, which means we should not have the heart to harm other, but at the same time, we must be vigilant so that we will not be harmed.

There are bad guys everywhere, even in the police department. Thus, we must always be vigilant. When Alex is prevented from seeing his wife and son, Clara, his wife, finds a way to confront Alex. It is because Clara has sensed that something is not right about Alex when he ignores his waiting wife and son at the press conference.

2. Systems are inter-related

Our body is made up of different systems working together. When Alex is emotionally overwhelmed, the doctor lowers his dopamine levels until he no longer displays any emotions. Yes, this is what a doctor can do when you want fast results. The bad news is, we do not know if other systems in the body are affected too. Thus, we must always be careful and think about long-term solution.

For example, if we increase sugar intake, we will have the risk of having diabetes. Next, we take the medicine to control the blood sugar level and the kidneys will need to work harder to cleanse the body. One thing leads to another. We must always think of the consequences of what we do today.

3. Problems are everywhere

Due to systems are inter-related, it takes time to find the root cause and solve the problem permanently. But, time is a crucial factor in the movie, they cannot afford to wait. Thus, more and more problems awaiting.

In life, we face problems everyday. It is important to tackle every problem, small or big, carefully. If you face a Mathematics problem today, what do you do? Ignore it? If you ignore it, you will have problem understanding and solving other Mathematics questions.

4. Biology / Psychology

How the lungs expand? You can watch it in the movie. Beware, the scenes may be disturbing and sickening for some people.

Feeling is what differentiates us from robots. It is the human element that makes human cares and loves for people, animals and other things in this world. Would you live together with an emotionless person? Imagine a world with robots, they wake up at the same time, go to work at the same time and sleep at the same time. Isn’t it a boring world?

Nonetheless, calm emotion (aka emotionless) is important in decision-making. Robots can make better decision, you say. Well, nobody is perfect. Human makes mistakes and learn from them. The world is more fun and exciting with some mistakes here and there.

5. Family stays together

Even though Alex is prevented from seeing his wife and son, even though Alex ignores his wife and son, even though Alex has become emotionless, Clara does not give up on Alex. This is family, this is love and this is something you cannot get from a robot. Furthermore, I am so touched when Alex’s son records all the matches but does not watch them, he is waiting for his father to watch together with him.

Robocop is a human vs. robots story. Personally, I prefer human to robots. Which one do you prefer?

What Can We Learn from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice?

When you watch science-fiction movie, you know that whatever that is showing in the movie is usually fiction and most of the time, exaggerating. However, when I was watching The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, I had a strong feeling to introduce this movie to my students who love Science.

In the movie, Dave Stutler, a physics student, uses Tesla coil to impress his childhood crush and later to destroy Morgana (the evil sorceress). Of course, it is a Disney movie; there is fantasy, magic and sorcery. Nonetheless, if you are interested in Science, you will find out more about Tesla coil after watching the movie.

A Tesla coil creates high-voltage electricity. A small Tesla coil is able to power light bulbs without wires while a big Tesla coil, like the one in the movie, is able to kill an evil sorceress. It is interesting, isn’t it?

What cause molecules to heat up? They vibrate. It is dull if you learn this from the textbook. But if you watch the movie and find out that you can “see” the molecules heating up, it makes Science more interesting to learn.

Furthermore, a beautiful song is played when Dave is impressing his childhood crush with Tesla coil. Amazing scenes with beautiful song makes a good movie. The song is Secrets by OneRepublic and I have been listening to the song repeatedly.

Below is the lyrics of the song as the ending of this post. Listen to the song and see if the song resonates with your soul 🙂

(1) I need another story
Something to get off my chest
My life gets kinda boring
Need something that I can confess

‘Til all my sleeves are stained red
From all the truth that I’ve said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw me wink, no
I’ve been on the brink, so

# Tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time don’t need another perfect lie
Don’t care if critics ever jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

(2) My God, amazing how we got this far
It’s like we’re chasing all those stars
Who’s driving shiny big black cars
And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve
And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Send it straight to gold
But I don’t really like my flow, no, so

(3) Oh, got no reason, got no shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don’t let me disappear
I’ma tell you everything

All my secrets away, all my secrets away

What Can We Learn from Frozen?

Have you watched Frozen? If you like Disney animation and musical movie, then you will like Frozen. Another reason that I like Frozen is because it is about the story of two sisters. I have always wanted a younger sister but I have two younger brothers instead.

What can we learn from Frozen?

1. Do not close the door

We face difficulties every now and then. There is a way to solve every difficulty. But, if you close the door, no one is able to help you. Be it an encouragement, be it an advice, be it just a hug… you need to open the door to receive it. We have family members and friends, even if they cannot help, they will ask for help from other people who may have faced similar difficulty. All you need to do is to open that door.

2. The opposite of love is not hate

The reason why Elsa closes the door to everyone is because she is afraid of her own power hurting the people around her. If she had opened the door, she would have discovered that love is all she needs to conquer the fear. The opposite of love is fear. All you need to do is to balance love and fear.

3. Do not protect the weaker one

What?! Yes, it sounds cruel, but I would like to make this an advice to myself and to all the parents. The King and the Queen (the parents) try to protect Anna, who does not possess any magical power, from Elsa. The problem is, the parents will die one day, most probably earlier than the children.

You can protect the weaker one for 10 years or 20 years, but not eternally. The weaker one will find a way to survive. If you are still worried that the weaker one is too young to think of a way to survive, you, as the parents, must think of a way to solve the problem, but not keeping the siblings apart.

4. Do not decide to marry someone whom you have just met that day

Despite how much you believe in love-at-first-sight, you can always wait for another day to decide an important decision. Marriage is a lifelong commitment. If the person is meant-to-be, he / she can always wait for another day too.

5. Things are beautiful when you only imagine them

I like the imagination of Olaf, the snowman. Nonetheless, reality is always tough. No matter how beautiful summer is to Olaf, he needs to face the reality that he will melt in summer. Of course, with Elsa’s magical power, Olaf survives. Where can I find Elsa in the real world?

6. There are two sides to every coin

Look at the magnificent ice castle built by Elsa, isn’t it great to have magical power? On the other hand, look at the “side-effect” of her magical power, the whole kingdom turns into a snow kingdom. There are two sides to every coin, we must look at the good and the bad of something and must also learn to control the power we have and not to be controlled by the power.

7. Be creative!

When Anna’s heart is hurt by Elsa and only a true love act can save her, everybody is thinking about a kiss from her true love. We must not let the conventional blind our eyes and mind. It turns out that a true love act is not a kiss. If you watch the movie, you will know the answer.

“She is my sister, she would never hurt me.” ~ Anna

Whether you have a sister or not, Frozen shows you that a sister is worth all your love. Have a great time enjoying the magical moments in the movie!

What Can We Learn from Gravity?

Many people compare Gravity to Avatar. Before I watch the movie, I do not think both movies are comparable. After watching the movie, I still do not think both movies are comparable. Both use 3D effects, but in a different way. Okay, we are not going into details how they are different or similar. We are going to learn from Gravity, a movie that touches my heart.

1. Keep going

Do not give up, no matter whatever situation you are in.

2. Keep calm

If you are in a hopeless situation, keep calm and think of a way to get out. This link to item 3 below.

3. Use all the knowledge that you have learnt

After you have calmed yourself down, think of all the knowledge that you have learnt and try to use them to solve your problem. Having said that, the knowledge also includes common sense.

4. Let go

Let go when you need to. Death of a loved one is especially hard to let go, but must be let go. You do not want to cling to something that will drag you down.

5. Have faith

Have faith and learn to pray.

6. Learn a second language

In this movie, it is Chinese language. I would encourage you to learn a language that is related to your work. It may not be Chinese language. Learning a second, or a third, language in this digital age is always helpful because you do not know who you will get in touch with.

Learning a second language also enables us to learn its wisdom and culture and to be more acceptive to new ideas.

7. Home is where the heart is

Go home, no matter how safe, quiet, beautiful, peaceful you feel at other places. There is no better place than home.

8. If someone would give me $1 billion, I would not go into space.

Going into space involves a lot of risks; one of the risks is that you are unable to go home. No matter how much money someone would give me, the money could not compensate the risks involved.

Gravity is a totally different movie than Avatar. For me, it is a movie that makes me think of life. Have you stumbled upon some difficult situations lately? Go and watch Gravity, you will have a new perspective on life.
